The BBQ Predicament
When it comes to barbeque, there are so many takes that it can be hard to agree on what style is best. Whether you like your hot dogs Chicago style, coney style or even fried and on a stick, at least we can all agree that many of our favorite summer events surround the grill.
According to a recent survey, 80% of homeowners have a grill or smoker, and 34% use it to celebrate Father's Day. However, the menu isn't always so healthy—especially when it comes to salt content.
Americans consume more than 3,400 milligrams of sodium daily, though experts recommend less than 2,300 milligrams per day. That's especially hard to manage when barbeque staples are packed with salt.
In fact, a meal that includes a bacon cheeseburger, hot dog, chips, soda and condiments could put your sodium intake at 2,500 milligrams or higher, depending on the brands used.
Too much sodium can increase the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, so lowering your salt intake is important. We know those burgers and juicy steaks are often hard to say no to, but there are healthy alternatives you can add to your BBQ mix, such as:
Fruits and veggies. Not only is the produce colorful, but vegetables like asparagus, eggplant and tomatoes become tender and richly flavored when grilled. Similarly, mangos, bananas, pineapples and apples caramelize—which is a healthier way to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Lean meats, such as skinless chicken breasts, turkey burgers and fish like salmon are great replacements for red meat.
Homemade marinades with citrus juices, vinegar and salt-free seasonings. You also can try paprika, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and onion powder.
Healthy side dishes like quinoa salads or wild rice as sides can introduce an exciting and nutritious twist to traditional BBQ fare. Whole grains provide a hearty base that complements lean proteins and grilled vegetables and fruits recommended for a balanced spread.
So, don't forget—you can still go whole hog with the grilling and make good choices without compromising on taste.
